In Jo’s words:
How My Mountain Was Born
The title of this book wasn’t something I chose overnight. In many ways, it chose me.
Two months before I ever met the man from Pakistan, I painted a mountain. At the time, I believed the mountain represented my physical disability. Living with multiple sclerosis, I thought the mountain was the obstacle standing between me and freedom. I believed that if I could only climb it—if I could walk again—then I would finally be free.
Then I met a man who lived in the mountains of northern Pakistan.
Suddenly, the painting seemed almost prophetic. I convinced myself it was fate, destiny, or perhaps a sign that I was meant to travel there. The mountain in my painting no longer represented my illness; it became a place. A calling. A journey I believed I was supposed to take.
I had no idea that the greatest journey would not be across continents, but within myself.
The experiences that followed forced me to confront not only that relationship, but the unresolved wounds I had carried since childhood. As I slowly healed layer after layer of trauma, a completely different meaning emerged.
I realised that I had misunderstood the painting all along.
The mountain had never been my legs.
It had never been Pakistan.
It had never been a destination waiting to be reached.
I was the mountain.
Everything I needed to overcome had always been within me—the fear, the conditioning, the trauma, the self-doubt, and, ultimately, the strength to rise above them.
The man I met in Pakistan did not create my mountain. He became the catalyst that revealed it.
This book is the story of climbing that mountain—not to reach somewhere else, but to finally come home to myself.
